Chicago / NYC Road Trip..... Day 1

Our Amtrak train was scheduled to leave Albuquerque at 12pm so we left Thatcher early at 2:45am. The kids slept almost the entire 5 hour drive.  I think everytime we make that drive it gets a little faster.... or maybe it's just easier to drive fast at night!

Our train left about 45 minutes late.  As you can see from the pictures Paige was not too sure about the train at first, but she quickly got over it.

It was a slow moving day, we were in Colorado by the time we fell asleep.  We booked coach tickets - so so so much less expensive than the sleeper rooms.  I'm surprised at how roomy the seats are though.  And they recline quite far with foot rests.

The bathrooms are small and were ok until our train loaded up with over a hundred dirty stinky scout troops finishing 12 days in the wild.  Yeah, pretty stinky.     Luckily the car ahead of us has a roomier bathroom that is still pretty clean.

We spent a lot of time in the observation car watching the scenery and playing card games.  He scenery is beautiful, especially when it turned into the Plains.  We saw a herd of elk and several little antelope in the grasses.  And the sunset was fantastic.

Washington DC

These picture posted out of order, but they are all of the few days we spent in DC.  It was a lot of fun, but you really need at least a week to see everything.  We did A LOT of walking and A LOT of swimming at our hotel.  Our hotel was great, we used our Marriott points and were able to stay across the street from the Pentagon, it was really a great location.  We had a lot of fun in DC and Mount Vernon, especially Kevin.  He's our history buff and wanted his picture taken in front of every memorial.

We also went to Mount Vernon, George Washington's home

Ford Theatre - had to keep making u-turns down all the one way streets until we finally found it
Again, worn out kids every night
